Letter from the Superintendent Regarding STAAR

5/30/2014

Dear NEISD Parents:

As our year comes to a close in North East ISD, we are so proud of everything our students have accomplished – both in and out of the classroom.  We appreciate the incredible support from our teachers, staff and you.

You recently received or will soon receive your child's STAAR and/or End of Course scores. We are required by the state to give these standardized tests. As a district, our students typically do well.  We are excited to announce that as a district we met standard.  In fact, in most areas we far exceeded state averages. It is important to keep these scores in perspective. This is just one measurement of student performance, and these tests cannot fully measure all that your child knows. There is so much more to a child’s education than one particular test on one particular day.

Although this data can be helpful in some respects and identify areas of focus, our district must concentrate on more than high stakes standardized tests. We believe in educating the whole child. We want every student to excel academically, be independent thinkers, work cooperatively, and overall be productive citizens in a global society. I, along with our school board, administrators and teachers have been very open about the fact that too much emphasis is placed on these tests and they do not support all aspects of learning.

We realize for our high school students, the End of Course exams play a significant role. If a student does not pass all five of those exams, graduation is not possible. We will continue to ensure that all students receive the instruction and support they need to be successful, including summer intervention programs and re-tests

Also, in grades five and eight, the exams are considered high stakes because students must pass them in order to be promoted automatically to the next grade level.

If you have any questions about your child’s test results, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher and/or principal.

Thank you and have a great summer.

Sincerely,

Brian Gottardy, Ed. D.

Atentamente,

Brian Gottardy, Ed.D.

Student Feedback

Parents,

In an effort to make a decision regarding our classess in the specials rotation for 2014-2015, our Tuscany Heights Elementary Student Campus Improvement Committee developed a survey for all of our students. We are requesting that all students complete the questions on the link below in hopes to guide us in making decisions for next year. Obsviously, all students will attend PE, Music, and Art; however, we want to assess the success of our Brain Station. Please help us by having your child complete this or your children work together to give feedback on one survey for your family. We appreciate your time!

Also, a huge thank you to our Student CIC members for coming up with great questions! It has been a honor to work with them this year and I look forward to next year!

Don't forget all library books were due Friday, May 23rd. If you see any at your house or in backpacks, please return those soon.  Thank you!

Student Placement Input

5/19/2014

Parents,

As we begin to wrap of the 2013-14 school year, I would like to take a moment to gather any input you feel important to consider when we are making decisions for your child(ren) in the coming school year.

I rely heavily on my teaching staff to make the best placement choices for your child(ren), because they know them in an educational environment and I trust they will make appropriate placement decisions.

If you choose to provide feedback, please do so on this form WITHOUT naming a teacher. It is impossible for me to honor every parents specific teacher request, yet I can appreciate parents wanting to give input. This is designed to capture characteristics of your child(ren) and teacher characteristics as well.

Deadline for submission is: Friday, May 23rd. Please return via email to myself, [email protected], or in a sealed envelope addressed to my attention, Tara Bailey.
