The 6th Annual Run for the Heights, 5K Run/Walk, Kids’ Fun Run, & Health Fair, held at Tuscany Heights Elementary, on Saturday, February 27, 2016, proved to be our biggest and best event to date. We had approximately 1,500 people in attendance and the morning weather was perfect!!! Runners and walkers from all over San Antonio came out to brave the hilly and challenging 5K course and visit with over 40 local community businesses on site. There were 852 registered 5K participants, 308 Fun Run registered participants and 150+ volunteers. JC Ultimate Training and Tusky the Tiger headed up our pre-race warm ups getting runners ready to run!! Our emcee, Albert Flores, FOX4 Meteorologist, kicked off the event with the Opening Ceremony performed by the Reagan High School JROTC and Tuscany Heights Tiger Beat Choir singing the National Anthem. First up was the Fun Run as kids of all ages sprinted their way through the ¾ mile course. All Fun Run participants earned a spirit stick for their accomplishment. The chip-timed 5K was next with runners and walkers weaving their way through the surrounding neighborhood and multiple hills. Our race timing company, Split Second Productions, timed the 5K and runners were able to view their times as they crossed the finish line. Our top finishers were Nadine Reasoner with a time of 21:32 and Ryan Garza (a Tuscany Heights Alumni student, now at Reagan High School), who finished with a time of 16:58. The top 3 overall males/females received medals and gift certificates from iRun, Sports Authority, Gold’s Gym & 9 Rounds Kickboxing. Additional medals and awards went to the top 3 males/females in each 5 year age category, ranging from 10 and under to 70+. Our Top T.H.E. staff member was Mrs. Claudia LeBeau who was awarded a first place medal, $50 iRun gift certificate and $30 Sports Authority gift certificate. Finally, there were special awards for the top girl and boy in grades K-5, which included medals and gift certificates from the Mays YMCA and Bricks 4 Kidz.

Congratulations to all the Fun Run and 5K Finishers! After the races, participants visited with over 40 local community businesses in the Sponsor Expo & Health Fair to receive valuable health information, get health screenings, view fitness opportunities and sample nutritional products. HEB and The Bagel Factory provided post-race food and drinks for all participants. Free health screenings for BP, Glucose, and Cholesterol were offered by North Central Baptist Hospital; BMI by the Mays YMCA; and physical therapy techniques by Promotional Physical Therapy. Tusky the Tiger had several community mascot friends on site from HEB, Chick-Fil-A, SportClips, and Stone Oak Speech & Language Center, all giving high fives and taking pictures with participants. There were plenty of kid friendly activities provided by event sponsors, including face painting, carnival games, Orange Leaf, popcorn from Oak Tree Orthodontics & Flamingo Rey’s Island Ice samples. There were plenty of interactive fitness opportunities & demonstrations offered by The Jumping Dragons, Talamentez Karate, JC Ultimate Training, Mays YMCA, Let’s Go San Antonio, SA Parks & Recreation Department, and Rainbow Play Systems.
One of the event participants commented, “Wow, what a fantastic event! I've run in countless races and I promise you I've never done a 5K with this amount of pre and post-race activity. I highly recommend supporting this event. It's a great way to support our wonderful Tuscany Heights PTA. Well done to the organizers and all of the volunteers. That was a super challenging course and we loved having all of the support out there cheering us on. And holy smokes, this race is certainly attracting some fast runners! I couldn't believe some of the times announced during awards! Great event, great community!”

Run for the Heights not only raised funds for the Tuscany Heights Elementary PTA, a 501(c) 3, but helped promote health and wellness in the community. Volunteers included community partners from HEB and Kohl’s plus several local school groups such as Tuscany Heights WatchDOGS, Staff & Parents, Johnson HS Cheer Team, Johnson HS AVID, MacArthur HS PALS, Reagan HS National Honor Society, and several other students and school groups. These volunteers, students and many other student leaders from Tuscany Heights helped to create a spirit of pride and community. Thanks to all who contributed to the success of the 6th Annual Run for the Heights!
