THE PTA is looking for a few good D.O.G.S. to be the "Heroes of the Hallway!"

Kindergarten through 5th Grade is an important and exciting time for our children for many reasons, and we need Watch D.O.G.S.®  (Dads of Great Students) to be a part of these experiences.  Watch D.O.G.S. takes no special training or secret handshakes, just a desire to be involved with our children's lives, and to make a difference as a positive role model in the educational setting.

Watch D.O.G.S (Dads of Great Students) is an innovative program being used by schools across America which helps them to be positively impacted by the committed involvement of fathers and father-figures in their student’s life.  Our goal is to have you spend at least one day this year at the school to be a positive male role model and to provide an extra set of eyes and ears. Studies show a child who has a positive adult male role model who actively engages on his or her life is twice as likely to graduate high school as a child who doesn’t and is going to develop more fully socially, physically and academically. There are over 20 million children in America that live in a fatherless home and there are countless more who live in a home where their father isn't engaged in their life. Your children are lucky, they have you. But not all kids are that lucky (Learn more about fatherlessness here... ). So, let's get involved and have fun while building a positive atmosphere for your child!

Who are WATCH D.O.G.S.?  Fathers / Father-figures, Step Dads, Grandfathers, Uncles, Brothers (21 or older), Teacher’s family (sons, husbands, fiancé), Civic Organizations (Kiwanis, Rotary, etc.), Civil Servants (Police, Fire), or Corporate Partners.

WATCH D.O.G.S. benefit in many ways.  WATCH D.O.G.S. get a glimpse of students’ everyday world, gain a greater awareness of the positive impact they can have on students’ lives (academics, self esteem, social behavior), and receive smiles and high fives in the hallway.

What is a Typical Day Like?
During the day, Watch D.O.G.S may read and work with students, play at recess, eat lunch with students, high five as much as possible, give stickers and other goodies for good behavior, patrol the hallways, assist with traffic flow and any other assigned activities where they actively engage with not only their own students, but other students as well. Here is a glimpse of a typical day:
  • Your day will begin when you arrive at school in your official WATCH D.O.G.S. T-shirt. Park on the designated WD parking space right in front or on the visitors' space.
  • You will be given a walkie talkie (very important!), watchDOGS stickers and pencils to hand out for good behavior, a quick orientation sheet, including all the "do's and don’ts," and a detailed schedule and map to begin your day.
  • Using the schedule, you will have the opportunity to plan your day and visit your children during lunch, recess (push kiddos on the swings!) and specials (Gym, Music). Lunch is one of the areas that really use our help so please put some extra effort there (let the teachers in the cafeteria know you are there to help). And set time to eat with your kiddos of course.
  • Before announcements, you can ask the front desk if they need assistance, otherwise, you can have breakfast with your kids or you can help with traffic flow, greet and high five kids as they come in.
  • When morning announcements are made, you and your child(ren) will be introduced and a picture will be taken for the "WATCH D.O.G.S. Wall of Fame." So, please be sure to know exactly where to go and make your kids aware to meet you at the media room to not miss this (ask front desk for directions if necessary).
  • After announcements, you will ask the front desk, librarian or teachers (the ones that leave a watchDOGS paw outside their door) if they need help. You will monitor your walkie talkie as you may be paged by the front desk regularly. Other wise, patrol the halls and lot, smile, tell jokes and give high fives!
  • At the end of the day you will complete an exit survey (located on a library computer) and assist with the dismissal of students.

Ready to be a Watch DOG?

  1. Step 1: DPS clearance (background check): NEISD requires all volunteers to submit a Volunteer Criminal History Record Check form. Please plan ahead as it can take 1 to 2 weeks to process. You can fill out the form at the NEISD web site here. The district will email you as soon as you are clear. If you applied to volunteer during previous school years and were approved, you do not need to re-apply to volunteer for the current school year. The volunteer program will automatically resubmit your background check every 2 years. You can check the status of your application by calling the school's front desk (Ask for Laura Garcia) at 210-407-8201. You must be clear (approved by the district) to proceed.
  2. Step 2: WatchDOGS t-shirts: You must wear an official WATCH D.O.G.S. t-shirt (short or long sleeve, as long as it is white with the WD logo on the front). Additionally, and optionally, your children can wear "My Hero is a Watch DOG" t-shirts. Access the online store here (If you get asked for a school code, enter "TX1738")
  3. Step 3: Signup for a date to volunteer online: After you have completed steps 1 and 2, RSVP online. You will be prompted for your email to begin and then you can select the day(s) you will be available to volunteer.
